Since September 1, there is no more smoking allowed in Queen Street Mall. It's funny that it never bothered me people smoking in an open air environment, but I can feel the difference. The air is so much cleaner.
The Brisbane City Council ban applies to Queen Street, between George and Edward streets, and Albert Street, between Elizabeth and Adelaide.
Under the ban, people will have to walk out of the mall onto Elizabeth, George, Adelaide or Edward streets or into Burnett Lane to light up.
A three-step process will apply when smokers are caught in the mall, with council officers asking them to put out their cigarette, before giving a warning and then issuing a $200 fine.
The ban was announced in July by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, following a decision made in November by then-lord mayor Campbell Newman. In announcing the ban, Cr Quirk said he accepted some people might be opposed but the public "overwhelmingly" supported it. "The position of the general public is clear," he said.
"The surveys that we undertook [to research a potential ban showed] 82 per cent of people supported a ban and that was supported very much by other media surveys that were conducted at that time."

Hi there, I'm a journalism student working on a story on the recent Queen St Mall smoking ban and would love to have you comment. Is there an e-mail I could reach you at? Thanks!
Cheers,
Mariam
