Brisbane electric cars get new re-charge stations

Twenty electric car charging stations will soon be built within an 80 kilometre radius Brisbane's central business district, the state government announced yesterday.
Environment Minister Vicki Darling told the Australia Electric Vehicles Conference in Brisbane yesterday the first of these new re-charge station locations will be announced next year.
Local business organisations and community groups will have the opportunity to trial the technology by borrowing an EV (electric vehicle) for up to three months.
The first 20 EV re-charge points will cost around $200,000 and will be built in appropriate government buildings.
If 1 per cent of Queensland's car fleet in 2020 were EVs, and all were re-generated from renewable electricity, more than 97,000 tonnes of transport greenhouse gas could be avoided.
Ergon Energy is running a three year trial in Townsville and on Magnetic Island to test seven electric vehicles, including the recharging of the electric cars.
Energex is also researching the use of electric cars as "mobile batteries" for storing electricity to be used during peak periods.
The Department of Resource Management estimates there will be 2000 electric cars on Queensland roads by 2015, rising to 32,000 by 2020.
