Brisbane rolls out wireless for parks

The following post was copied from www.heraldsun.com.au
THERE may not be a wave in sight but residents can now surf in Brisbane's parks after the roll-out of wireless internet in public areas. Locals and tourists will be able to access wireless internet in parks and public spaces in 20 locations, says Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk.
Brisbane City Council has allocated $2 million in this year's budget for the internet roll-out and a further $400,000 to upgrade Wi-Fi technology in 34 of its libraries. Mr Quirk said more than 5000 people have logged on to free Wi-Fi coverage in the city's botanic gardens since November and the average time online was about an hour.
"The popularity of free Wi-Fi access in the City Botanic Gardens, New Farm Park and the council's libraries has demonstrated that internet access is important to many of Brisbane's residents and visitors," he said. "Wi-Fi access will be available in hotspots at each location, and signage will be installed to help people identify where these hotspots are.
"Work is expected to start next month to progressively roll out Wi-Fi access across the 20 locations by June next year." The public areas selected for the latest Wi-Fi roll-out include Post Office Square and King George Square in the CBD and Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens.
The full list of wireless internet locations is available at www.brisbane.qld.gov.au.
